Cass Hall

REFURBISHMENT OF AFFORDABLE STUDENT ACCOMMODATION IN HACKNEY

Cass Hall is a 1980’s purpose-built student accommodation providing some of the most affordable student accommodation in London. Architecture 00 worked closely with both the client and focus groups to explore a number of phased-development options. These led to a first phase comprising the comprehensive refurbishment of the existing building along with new extensions and a new standalone ancillary building. The site constraints of being located in a densely populated residential part of Hackney, were amplified by a extremely fast construction programme, that sought to complete the work in a 14 week period over the summer vacation. To complete the refurbishment of over 130 bedrooms, 14 shared kitchens, 30 WC’s and showers, plus new communal facilities required the site to run 24 hours at times.

Location: Hackney, London
Client: Cass and Claredale Trust

Next Steps

Following the successful completion of Phase 01, 00 have been working with Cass and Claredale Trust to explore a Phase 02, which explores different options to add further student accommodation units to the Well Street site, with the ambition to deliver much needed affordable housing for students, as well as freeing up Hackney homes for Hackney residents.
